Which Species Will Live?
A: List the major ideas, concepts or key points- point by point
B: Summarize the AUTHOR’s main point or idea- at LEAST 1-2 paragraphs
Scientists are being forced to decide which species can be saved and which must be let go.When budgets shrink, environmental stress started growing. Scientists acknowledged the need for triage. Triage is the decision making for battlefield medics often used to determine who could be saved or let go. Triage is the most provocative ideas in conservation today and can allow society to prematurely jettison tough cases, choosing from short-term economic rewards over long-term conservation goals. Since more and more species are started to become endangered a triage is much needed. Scientists believe umbrella species which is "function first" should be first priority before other species whose roles are more important. Another idea called "evolution first" is where species with a high change for diversity were first priority. In the end protected both function and evolution called hotspots soon became the best idea to do.

After reading this article, I have learned what triage means and what it is. In my opinion I can say that triage is a good idea for protecting species. It's the best decision to determine who should be saved or not. Protected areas are hard to police and because climate change is already shifting specie ranges, and static boundaries may not offer the best long-term protection. Even if a type of specie is endangered it isn't a reason for the type of specie to be eliminated that quickly. As years go by I expect there to be an idea even better than triage to help protect and keep species from going extinct.

What does this remind me of?
Getting into college. Anyone with education can get into college, but the people who take school serious and care about their grades have a better chance of getting into college and having a better future.
- Scientists acknowledged the need for triage
- Triage is known as the decision making for battlefield medics often used to determine who could be saved base on time, expertise, supplies, or combinations of these factors
- Triage may sound like a surrender, however long term wise, it could all be worth it
- Today, triage is the most provocative ideas in conservation
- Triage approaches should select among ecosystems instead of species
- Politicians and Regulators cared more for economy than the planet
- Some scientists believe umbrella species or species which are essential to other species should be first priority before other species whose roles are more redundant
- The evolution first approach emphasizes genetic diversity allowing species to survive in rapidly changing environments.
- Some researchers say the triage approach should be applied to ecosystems rather than individual species.
- Scientists argue for weighting species according to role in ecosystem function first
- Umbrella species whose own survival ensures survival of many others should be protected
- Protected areas are hard to police and because climate change is already shifting specie ranges, and static boundaries may not offer the best long-term protection.
- A triage system could allow society to prematurely jettison tough cases, choosing from short-term economic rewards over long-term conservation goals.
- The idea of protecting ecosystems was good for a time, but it met criticism for meeting just human need
- Protected areas are hard to police and because climate change is already shifting specie ranges, and static boundaries may not offer the best long-term protection.
- Protection is also based on costs, benefits, and the likelihood of success
- A species low ranking shouldn't be a death sentence rather a call to action
- setting priorities overtly could inspire societies to spend more money on conservation efforts

- Triage is a decision scientist use to save species
- Not all species get saved
- First priority species usually get saved

What if...? We didn't have triage:
- The would be no effort on saving any species
- Many species would be extinct
