Summary: The article Toxins in your Hair is about a treatment called the Brazilian blowout. The Brazilian blowout is very harmful and it is used to straighten hair. It requires formaldehyde, a toxic carcinogen, which have been links of formaldehyde to nose and throat cancer to leukemia. Places that have had this happen was Portland, Oregon and Canada which cause caused the loss of smell. Brazilian Blowout is claimed to be formaldehyde free, there have been traces of methylene glycol which is the form formaldehyde takes when mixed with waterIt has been said that the Brazilian blowout was said to have less than 0.2% of the formaldehydem, but really had 6.3-10.6% of formaldehyde. Although the FDA has restricted the amount of harmful chemicals, they had said that if is safe if it contains less than 0.2% of formaldehyde. Jamie Silberberger had said so herself that all products should be tested for safety before they hit the market.

Reflection: After reading this article, I'm very surprise that something as popular as the Brazilian blowout is as harmful as it is. I knew it was harmful, but i didn't know it was that harmful that it caused nose bleeds, and throat cancer. Many women are likely to get a Brazilian blowout on a regular basis, not only will the chemicals harm their hair, but it'll harm themselves also. The fact that this product requires formaldehyde is something that should be known to the hair public, especially women. People should be more aware of the dangers of the Brazilian Blowout, and should be more cautious whenever they decide to get out. The better thing to do, would be to use a hair straightener everyday, or get a perm which is also harmful, but not as harmful as the Brazilian blowout. I suggest that there should be a solution where a Brazilian blowout can be done without formaldehyde being required to do so.
