A: List the major ideas, concepts or key points- point by point
Carbon emissions will keep climbing despite the introduction of more energy-efficient vehicles, buildings and appliances. U.S and other countries must make a major commitment to developing renewable energy sources that generate little or no carbon. Research shows that U.S alone could grow to 10,000 MW in just 20 years. Challenge will be lowering price of photovoltaics, which are expensive to manufacture. Wind power has been growing at a pace rivaling the solar industry. Wind turbines increased more than 2.5% a year. Solar cells photovoltaics use semiconductor materials to convert sunlight into electric currents. More than 20 states in the U.S have adopted standards setting a minimum for the fraction of electricity that must be supplied with renewable sources.

After reading this article I've learned that people are starting to get into using renewable resources. Renewable sources promise to enhance America's energy security by reducing reliance on fossil fuel. Seeing that the United States is trying to produce less carbon dioxide gives me hope that other countries around the world we be influence by their choices. Then maybe they'll try to commit to using renewable resources also. With the rest of the world on board, the government might start funding for renewable energy.
So what?:
Says who?:
What if...? The whole world starts using renewable energy:
What does this remind me of?: Cars that run on oil. It's much better to run your car, than gas, but more people need to get on board with it for it to succeed.
- In recent years, dramatic improvements in performance and affordability of solar cells, wind turbines and biofuels have paved the way for mass commercialization
- Renewable sources promise to enhance America's energy security by reducing reliance on fossil fuels
- Solar power is somewhat popular in many African nations
- In Europe, one of the biggest source of alternative energy is wind power
- In some locations, wind is the cheapest form of electricity
- Biofuels intent to at least replace a portion of our fuels
- Solar cells photovoltaics use semiconductor materials to convert sunlight into electric currents
- They provide a tiny slice of world electricity. .15% of total generating capacity. It could potentially supply 5,000 times as much energy as the world currently consumes.
- Solar cells easy to use because they can be installed in so many places
- photovoltaics can be installed in many places, roofs, walls of homes and office building, in vast arrays in the desert photovoltaics is expensive to manufacture electricity produced by crystalline cells has a total cost of 20 to 25 cents per kilowatt hour
- Kenya is the global leader in the number of solar power systems installed per capital photovoltaics are only half as efficient as crystalline cells, their cost is much lower that they are more affordable and useful for the 2 billion pp worldwide who currently have no access to electricity
- Ethanol impact on greenhouse gas emissions are ambiguous. Substituting corn ethanol for gasoline reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 18%, but it will not do much to slow global warming unless it becomes cleaner.
- Another promising biofuel is called green diesel.
- Researchers produced this fuel by gasifying biomass, heating organic materials, converting compounds into long-chain hydrocarbons using the Fischer-Tropsch process
- Result would be an economically competitive liquid fuel for motor vehicles that would add virtually no greenhouse gases.
- More than 20 states in the U.S have adopted standards setting a minimum for the fraction of electricity that must be supplied with renewable sources.
- Green diesel has also thought to be a promising solution
- Funding for research and innovation for renewable sources has withered
