Reflection:
The video The Story of Stuff taught me that the products that we use go from cradle to grave. The process is in the order from extraction, production, distribution, consumption, and disposal. Extraction is the reason why we run out of natural resources. I found out that 1/3 of our natural resources are gone and that the reason why we run out of it is because we use more than we share. Production pollutes the air the most, since all the natural resources that are taken, are mixed with toxics first. the saying "toxics in toxics out" is real. It's hard to believe that something that I thought was harmless, such as breast feeding a child is very dangerous. Since the things we use are mixed with toxics, breast feeding can pass on those toxics to your child. Distribution is what most people in the world don't realize when purchasing items. Stores are basically selling us toxic junk and we don't realize the "externalized cost", which is when we don't see the value that goes into making it. Items that we purchase may say Made in China, but doesn't say how many countries it took to get those resources to make it that item. Consumption is what we humans do best. Were a nation of consumers, and are daily cycle is to work for money, go home to watch T.V. that persuades us to buy things, and then go shop for it. The makers of products use ideas called planned & perceived obsolescence. Planned obsolescence is when they design something so people can buy them for a specific amount of time and then replace it with something better the next year. Perceived obsolescence is when some products that we have is still in good use, but we throw them out because their not up with the latest trends. 99% of the stuff we purchase is thrown away. All the trash that we consume that are mixed with toxics from our production goes to landfills, and is later on burned producing toxics into the air polluting our planet even more. The best thing to do, is to recycle to reduce the harm on earth, and try to start a cycle that doesn't result into disposal in the end, but instead back to extraction again.
