Silent Spring
1: What observations did Rachel Carson make about her environment? Explain in detail.
The observations Rachel Carson made about her environment was beauty. She pictured the roads filled with plants. Many farms and orchards. In the town not only did the people live in harmony, but also the animals with it. Plenty of birds, and fishes.
2: How have chemicals changed the environment? What is DDT? What is it used for and what are the consequences of its use?
Chemicals have changed the environment by polluting it with it's toxics. It can affect the air, animals, food, and humans. DDT for example changed the environment by at first was meant to kill insects, but had an affect on other animals and soon later on the insects evolved and kept on reproducing creating more insects which were immune to DDT. This caused scientists to create a DDT even stronger that had an even more affect than the last.
3: Carson uses Robert Frost’s poem, The Road Less Traveled, as an analogy for making choices about our future- what does she say about what we must do?
What she says we must do is do as the example in Frost's poem is to choose the road less traveled on. She uses this as a symbol to show that us humans shouldn't think that the best thing to do to solve a problem is by creating something filled with chemicals to use. Instead we should think ahead, and mostly think about the future for both the road most traveled on, and the road less traveled on and decided from there what is the smarter thing to do for our environment that won't effect it harshly in the long run.
4: This book was written in 1962- have people heeded the warning about the toxins in our environment?
Yes people have heeded the warning about the toxins in our environment. Many laws and acts have been made and passed to decrease our use of toxins that can seriously destroy the environment. For example the Clean Water Act, and the Toxic Substances Control Act.
5: What is your opinion of the book excerpt? Explain.
My opinion on the book excerpt was that it's the important type of information that everyone should be aware about everyday. What we do now such as use toxins to solve our problems will hurt us not only now, but in the long run. These toxins travel from organism to organism and will never stop.
