On the Termination of Species
A: List the major ideas, concepts or key points- point by point
B: Summarize the AUTHOR’s main point or idea- at LEAST 1-2 paragraphs
Many scientists are beginning to be grateful that they won't be around to see many species disappear off of the Earth. Biologists and conservationists tend to be biased towards mammals, birds, and fish when most biodiversity is elsewhere. Environmental groups are also working hard to find high-priority hotspots. There are many predictions on how extinction will be like. Many scientists before 2000 believed that a very very high number of species would go extinct by the year 2000. The con0clusion drawn was that the current mammalian extinction rate is 17-377 times the background extinction rate. Habitat and species as well as population are all proportional, meaning less area would mean less species. It is difficult to find thousands of species disappearing every year with evidence to support. Scientists believe that saving evolution itself is the best thing to do.
C: Write a reaction paragraph to the article stating your own thoughts on the topic, using specific citations from the article to support your views
After reading this article, i think that discovering the rate of extinction is very important. The fact that the estimate was 27,000 species would go extinct every decade is very shocking. It's also very surprising to know that some species can take other species with them once they go extinct. With scientists finding out extinction rates, I think it's the best the to do to find out when mass extinction will occur. Although, like scientists I also believe that instead of endangered species or threatened hotspots, saving evolution is more important.

Says Who?:
What if...? Scientists find out the current rate of extinction:

Doing group work. Doing the work by yourself won't be as better as doing it with a group of people because you'll learn things much quicker.
- Many scientists are beginning to be grateful that they won't be around to see many species disappear off of the Earth
- Some scientists believe that instead of endangered species or threatened hotspots, saving evolution is more important
- Comparing the past 400 years with previous 65 million unavoidably assume that current extinction rate will be sustained over millions of years.
- Many scientists before 2000 believed that a very very high number of species would go extinct by the year 2000
- Researchers believe that only less than 4% of all species that have ever lived are fossilized
- Habitat and species as well as population are all proportional, meaning less area would mean less species
- If evolution does not do the trick, artificial selection may help preserve or destroy species
- Deforestation is at a rate of less than 1% a year
- A recent estimate was 27,000 species would go extinct every decade
- Attempts to find current extinction rate are fraught with more uncertainties
- For every species falsely said to be absent, there may be hundreds or thousands that vanish unknown to science
- When habitats shrink and population are wiped out, at a rate of 16 million a year, it could be a time bomb
- We can only know if the rate of extinction has increased or not by looking at the natural extinction rate and comparing it to the current extinction rate
- About 10 million species, 25,000 of them will suffer a premature extinction
- If those species is only in that area it will go extinct, however if it is found elsewhere, it will not
- Rate of recent planet extinction was compared in four similar regions and found that the most disturbed area had the lowest rate.
- Human induced extinctions will fall over time
- Leave conservationists with less sense of urgency with handful of weak political and economic arguments. Force them to realize that species in trouble today are already members of the doomed
- Conservationists are fearful that arches of entire ecosystems fall once a few keystone species are removed
