The Ocean's Invisible Forest

B: Summarize the AUTHOR'S main point or idea- at LEAST 1-2 paragraphs
Phytoplankton are plants in the ocean that can take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and produce photosynthesis. Phytoplankton can draw greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere and store it. Phytoplankton also need chlorophyll to go through photosynthesis. It also goes through primary production, which is converting carbon dioxide into organic matter. When phytoplankton die, they are converted back into carbon dioxide, being able to photosynthesize. Phytoplankton need nitrogen, which are nutrients that need to be in fixed form before usage. They also need iron to enhance the productivity of primary production. Although scientists believe that iron is able to control the amount of conversion bacteria can create.

Learning that phytoplankton can reduce carbon dioxide in our atmosphere is amazing. Phytoplankton do so just by going through the process of photosynthesis. I think that phytoplankton are one of the most important plants on earth, considering that stay in ocean. Since 1/3 of carbon dioxide we produce goes into our ocean, knowing that there are many phytoplankton photosynthesizing is good to hear. Phytoplankton is a plant that helps our environment a whole lot, and reduces our pollution. With phytoplankton reducing carbon dioxide by photosynthesis, and with everyone else trying to reduce their emissions of carbon dioxide, we could make a big impact in the next couple years.

The Happy Fishing Lab we did showed that something so simple like fish can be a so important to the ocean, and most of us don't realize it. Just like the phytoplankton, we don't realize that it goes through the process of photosynthesis causing it to have a big impact to our environment.
A. List the major ideas, concepts or key points- point by point
- Enhancing primary production can harm other marine organisms
- When stimulated Nutrients released will transport back to surface water
- Primary production is converting carbon dioxide into organic matter
- Phytoplankton use nitrogen to build protein in fixed form, by sets of bacteria and cyanobacteria
- By burning fossil fuels, carbon dioxide being released is 1 million times faster than volcanoes, more than plants and phytoplankton can handle.
- Phytoplankton take the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
- To go through photosynthesis, phytoplankton need chlorophyll
- When phytoplankton die, their cells are converted back into carbon dioxide, which is instantly available to by photosynthesized.
- Phytoplankton can draw greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere and store it
- Scientists believe that iron controls how much of conversion those bacteria can create
- More experiments are required to learn about phytoplankton behavior
- Burning fossil fuels result in carbon being circulated faster than the forests and phytoplankton can absorb it
- Phytoplankton need iron to control amount of nitrogen they can fix
- Phytoplankton are twice as productive than it was thought long ago
- Phytoplankton store about 7-8 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide in the ocean preventing it from mixing with warm water
